Neuralink Corp., the brain-computer interface company founded by Elon Musk, announced the successful completion of its second brain implant surgery.
The patient, identified as Alex, is now able to design 3D objects and play video games like Counter-Strike 2 using the implanted device. This surgery followed the first implantation, in which complications arose due to the electrode strands pulling away from the brain. To prevent a recurrence, Neuralink used new surgical techniques.
Neuralink's device currently allows patients to control on-screen cursors and digital devices, but the company is working to expand its capabilities. Future upgrades are expected to decode multiple simultaneous movements and handwriting, potentially helping people with severe neurological conditions communicate and interact with technology more effectively.
Musk aims to have the device implanted in several more patients by the end of the year.
