Telegram is developing a new user rating system, as uncovered by Durov’s Code.

References to the feature first appeared in the app’s code a few days ago. Users will soon be able to check their account level by tapping a dedicated badge in their profile.

Tapping the badge currently triggers a notification that reads: “Profile level reflects the reliability of the user’s payment reliability,” linking to Telegram’s existing Stars documentation. The system is now being gradually rolled out on a test server.

The exact mechanics remain unclear, but the leading theories include:

  • Users may be able to showcase their spending credibility — the higher the level, the more access they’ll have to certain features.
  • The rating could increase with every 1,000 Stars purchased, gifted, or spent.
  • The rating may tie into upcoming limitations, such as caps on the number of gifts a user can buy.
