OpenAI is gearing up to release GPT-5, with sources at The Verge reporting an August launch.

Microsoft is already scaling up its server infrastructure in preparation for the new language model. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly asked GPT-5 a question he was curious about, and the model responded "perfectly," prompting Altman to admit he "felt useless relative to the AI."

GPT-5 will come in three variants:

  • GPT-5 main: the largest version, available in ChatGPT and via API.
  • GPT-5 mini: a smaller version, also available in ChatGPT and API.
  • GPT-5 nano: the most lightweight model, available exclusively via API for developers.

The GPT-o series will be discontinued, with its advanced reasoning capabilities folded into GPT-5. The new lineup is expected to eliminate confusion across OpenAI’s current model offerings.
