OpenAI's Superalignment team disbanded amid internal struggles over AI safety

OpenAI's Superalignment team, created to govern "superintelligent" AI systems, faced resource shortages and internal disagreements, leading to the resignation of key members, including co-lead Jan Leike.

Promised 20% of the company's compute resources, the team often found its requests denied, making it difficult for them to do their job.

Leike, who was involved in the development of ChatGPT and GPT-4, cited the company's focus on product launches over AI safety as a major concern. Co-founder Ilya Sutskever also resigned amid a dispute with CEO Sam Altman.

Despite OpenAI's reassurances of continued commitment to AI safety, the team will no longer exist as a dedicated unit, raising concerns about the future focus on AI safety at the company.
