Starting August 13, 2025, YouTube will roll out an AI-powered system designed to identify underage users in the U.S.

The system will assess both the account’s stated age and user behavior on the platform. If the AI determines a viewer is under 18, age-based restrictions will be automatically applied.

These users won’t be able to view age-restricted content, will see only non-personalized ads, and will receive prompts to take breaks during extended viewing sessions. If flagged incorrectly, users will be able to verify their age with a passport, bank card, or selfie.

YouTube has warned creators that this new system may affect their audience analytics. If part of their subscriber base is classified as underage, it could result in reduced ad revenue due to the switch to non-personalized ads.

The initiative is part of Google’s broader efforts to strengthen online safety for children and teens.
