Australia has become the first country in the world to legislate a social media ban for children under 16, following the approval of a landmark bill in Parliament on November 28, Reuters reports.

While many parents have welcomed the law, critics question its enforceability and worry it may lead to increased social isolation for teenagers.

Under the law, which is expected to introduce the world's strictest regulations on youth social media access, platforms will be held accountable for compliance. Companies found allowing underage users to register could face fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($32 million).

The law will not take effect until the end of 2025, following a year-long test period concluding in mid-2025. Specific enforcement mechanisms and guidelines are expected to be outlined during this phase.

Proponents argue the legislation addresses growing concerns about online safety and the mental health of young people, but its real-world impact remains to be seen.
