The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is in discussions with Intel about the possibility of acquiring a government stake in the company to accelerate the development of its domestic manufacturing, Bloomberg reports, citing informed sources.
The exact size of the stake the government might seek has not yet been disclosed. According to the publication’s sources, the initiative is tied to a project to build the world’s largest semiconductor plant in Ohio, which Intel plans to make the flagship of its production network.
Talks began after a meeting between Trump and Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan. Possible deal structures are now being explored: some sources point to a direct purchase of shares using public funds, while others do not rule out changes to the original plans.
Intel declined to comment on the talks, and the U.S. president’s administration took the same position.
