ChatGPT head Nick Turley has not ruled out the possibility of ads in ChatGPT, though he says there’s no concrete information yet.
Speaking to The Verge as part of a podcast, Turley said ChatGPT moved to a freemium monetization model to handle demand during a period when the company struggled to keep the site running.
He also noted that the number of paid users has surpassed 5 million, up from 3 million "a couple of months earlier," adding that he doesn’t see free users as a "liability" for the company.
If OpenAI were to introduce ads into its neural network, the company would proceed carefully and thoughtfully. Turley noted that ChatGPT delivers "the best answer for you, with no other stakeholder in the middle."
The executive added that there are likely ways to incorporate advertising while maintaining the objectivity and usefulness of responses, but it would be "a novel concept" that would need to be approached with extreme caution.
