Apple is considering bringing cellular connectivity to future MacBook models, according to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg.

The upgrade would involve integrating a custom-built cellular modem, similar to those used in iPhones and iPads.

According to Gurman, Apple is seriously exploring the idea of adding cellular connectivity to the Mac for the first time. This means users wouldn’t need Wi-Fi to access the internet. Currently, this capability is reserved for the iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad.

Gurman noted that cellular connectivity is unlikely to appear on the Mac before 2026, as Apple first needs to release a second-generation modem capable of supporting higher speeds.

Bloomberg first reported Apple’s intention to develop a chip combining cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth functions back in early 2023. The first generation of this modem is expected to debut next year, but only for the iPhone and iPad.
