OpenAI has officially announced the rollout of advertising in ChatGPT.

According to the company, the move is intended to make advanced AI tools more accessible by lowering the financial barrier for users worldwide.

  • Ad placements will begin testing in the US in the coming weeks. Ads will appear at the bottom of ChatGPT responses when the conversation context suggests a relevant product or service.
  • Ads will be shown to free users and subscribers of the entry-level Go plan. Paid tiers including Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise will remain ad-free.
  • OpenAI says advertising will not affect the objectivity of ChatGPT’s responses. Sponsored content will be clearly labeled, and user data will not be sold to advertisers.
  • Ads will not be shown to users under 18 and will be excluded from sensitive topics such as politics and mental health.

OpenAI Vice President Fidji Simo said that advertising in ChatGPT is expected to become interactive over time, allowing users to ask questions directly to brands within the chat interface before making a purchase decision.

Alongside the ad announcement, OpenAI is expanding availability of its ChatGPT Go plan. The plan is now available globally and costs $8 per month, compared to $20 for ChatGPT Plus, offering higher usage limits, image generation, file uploads, and access to the memory feature.

Earlier, OpenAI also introduced a new Health section inside ChatGPT:
