Insider Moore’s Law Is Dead claims that Sony’s main goal for the PlayStation 6 is to achieve 120 fps at 4K resolution with ray tracing enabled.

On the current flagship console, such performance is only possible in less demanding games or with major graphical compromises. According to the report, Sony plans to equip the new console with a GPU based on the RDNA 5 architecture paired with a CPU built on the Zen 6 architecture.

The insider says rasterization performance could increase by 2.5 to 3 times compared with the base PlayStation 5. However, the biggest improvements are expected in ray tracing performance, which could see gains of 6 to 12 times over the PS5.

Against the upcoming console, even the recently released PlayStation 5 Pro may appear modest. The PlayStation 6 is expected to deliver roughly double the rasterization performance and 3 to 6 times stronger ray tracing capabilities.

Even with such hardware, achieving 120 fps at native 4K with ray tracing enabled will be challenging. Sony’s proprietary PSSR technology is expected to play a key role, with AI-based upscaling helping the console approach these performance targets.
