Apple is reducing production of its ultra-thin iPhone Air due to weak demand outside China.

According to Nikkei Asian Review, which cites sources familiar with the company’s plans, interest in the new model has fallen well below expectations, while sales of the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro have exceeded forecasts.

As a result, Apple has reallocated its production capacity. Manufacturing of the iPhone Air will be scaled back, while orders for the base iPhone 17 and 17 Pro models will increase. The company still expects overall iPhone 17 production to remain between 85 and 95 million units in 2025.

Sources described the reduction in iPhone Air output as comparable to phasing out the model. In China, where the phone’s launch was delayed due to eSIM regulations, it continues to sell strongly. However, in markets such as the US and Europe, sales have been significantly weaker.

The iPhone Air was initially expected to account for 10–15% of total iPhone 17 production. It was meant to prepare consumers for Apple’s first foldable smartphone, expected in 2026. But suppliers say component orders for the iPhone Air will drop by as much as 90% in November compared to September.
