Earlier this week, an investigation revealed that Apple and other tech giants used YouTube subtitles to train their AI models. Apple reportedly used this dataset to train its open-source OpenELM models, released in April.
However, Apple has clarified to 9to5Mac that its OpenELM model does not power any of its AI or machine learning features, including Apple Intelligence. The company stated that OpenELM was developed to contribute to the research community and advance open-source language model development.
Described as a “state-of-the-art open language model,” OpenELM is intended solely for research purposes and is not used in any Apple Intelligence features.
Apple confirmed that its Apple Intelligence models are trained on licensed data and publicly available data collected by its web-crawler, not the YouTube Subtitles dataset. Additionally, Apple announced it has no plans to develop new versions of the OpenELM model.
