Tesla has introduced an upgrade to its Phone Key functionality, leveraging the Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip embedded in iPhones to optimize performance.

With the latest Tesla software update 2024.2.3, owners of compatible Tesla vehicles can now benefit from enhanced communication accuracy and responsiveness between their vehicle and iPhone.

In the release notes, Tesla highlights the advantages of UWB technology, emphasizing improved locking, unlocking, and automatic door operation. To activate this feature, users simply need to upgrade their Phone Key from Bluetooth to UWB through the Tesla app. However, both the iPhone and the Tesla vehicle must support UWB for the enhanced functionality to work.

Currently, Tesla specifies that the UWB-enabled Phone Key feature is compatible with the latest-generation Model 3, 2023 Model X, and Cybertruck. Notably, the upgrade is not yet available for all Tesla models, including previous-generation Model 3 and current-generation Model Y, which lack UWB connectivity. Additionally, while some Android devices also feature UWB technology, this particular feature enhancement is exclusive to iPhone users at this time.

The integration of UWB connectivity represents Tesla's ongoing efforts to leverage cutting-edge technology to enhance user experience and functionality within its vehicles.
