Chosun Biz reports that Kaiwa Technology, a company based in Guangzhou, is working on a humanoid robot designed to carry and deliver a human child.

The concept, introduced by Dr. Zhang Qifeng, envisions a life-sized robot equipped with an artificial womb in its abdomen. The system would allow a fetus to grow for 10 months in artificial amniotic fluid, receiving nutrients through a hose — effectively simulating the process of natural gestation. Unlike neonatal incubators, which sustain life only after partial development, the "pregnancy robot" is intended to replicate the full cycle from conception to delivery.

So far, many details remain unclear. Dr. Zhang has not disclosed how fertilization or implantation of the embryo would occur, nor how the robot would perform the act of giving birth. He insists, however, that artificial womb technology has already matured in laboratory settings, and the next step is integrating it into a humanoid form to enable what he describes as genuine "human–robot interaction" during pregnancy.

If realized, the robot could provide an alternative for individuals or couples struggling with infertility or those wishing to avoid the physical demands of gestation. Kaiwa Technology estimates that using such a service would cost around 100,000 yuan ($14,000). A prototype is expected as early as next year, with commercial rollout planned for 2026.

The project has ignited ethical and legal debate. Questions persist about the psychological effects on children born this way, the sourcing of eggs and sperm, and the absence of maternal–fetal bonding. Addressing the controversy, Dr. Zhang stated: "We have held discussion forums with authorities in Guangdong Province and submitted related proposals while discussing policy and legislation."
