Preliminary data from the IDC indicates a notable shift in the smartphone market as Apple surpasses Samsung in global smartphone shipments throughout 2023.

Apple, with a 20.1% market share, has overtaken Samsung, which held the top position since 2010, with a 19.4% share.

The data further highlights Apple's resilience, as it is the sole company among the top three (Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi) to experience year-over-year growth in shipments. Apple increased its shipments from 226.3 million units to 234.6 million units.

Samsung's loss of the top position is attributed to increased competition in the Android market, with players like Huawei, Honor, and OnePlus offering competitive devices across various price ranges. The smartphone market experienced a 3.2% decline, with 1.17 billion units shipped in 2023. However, the growth observed in the second half of the year indicates a potential market recovery in 2024.
