Taiwanese semiconductor giant TSMC is aggressively expanding its global footprint — with 24 manufacturing sites currently under construction across multiple countries.
This massive growth is driven by surging demand for chips, particularly amid the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. In 2025 alone, TSMC plans to complete nine new facilities: eight wafer fabrication plants and one chip packaging site.
New factories are being built in the U.S., Europe, Japan, China, and other regions, with a strong focus on supplying AI accelerator developers who rely heavily on TSMC’s technologies.
However, the rapid expansion brings challenges, particularly in recruiting qualified talent. In the U.S., TSMC is facing high labor costs and a shortage of skilled engineers.
The company’s workforce is growing alongside its production capacity. TSMC employed 51,000 people in 2019; by the end of 2024, that number had risen to over 83,800. In the first months of 2025, an additional 1,300 jobs were created. The headcount is expected to reach 90,000 by the end of this year, and 100,000 by 2026.
