The streaming service lately released a short anime that added fuel to the fire over the debate surrounding AI usage.
The anime called "The Dog & The Boy" contains AI-generated backgrounds. Netflix Japan then twittered the following:
“As an experimental effort to help the anime industry, which has a labor shortage, we used image generation technology for the background images of all three-minute video cuts!”
Its twitter was hardly criticized. Netflix was mainly blamed for using AI-generated art instead of hiring human artist and covering the reason with the labor shortage.
Anime is booming in recent years while top animators reportedly earn just $1,400 to $3,800, low-level artist earn around $200 per month according to the report from 2021.
The issue with Netflix Japan twitter would draw attention to labor abuses and poor wages in the anime industry and be additional promotion to the released anime.
