OpenAI has confirmed it will consolidate several of its current models into one — GPT-5.

At present, ChatGPT offers a range of models tailored to different tasks, which has led to confusion among users. For instance, the o3 model supports advanced reasoning, while GPT-4o offers multimodal capabilities.

“We're truly excited to not just make a net new great frontier model, we're also going to unify our two series,” said Romain Huet, Head of Developer Experience at OpenAI, during the Building the Future with OpenAI Agents conference.

GPT-5 will combine both reasoning and multimodality — meaning it will be able to handle various inputs (text, images, files) and deliver responses with contextual reasoning. Users will no longer need to switch between models to get the most suitable output.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that GPT-5 will be released this summer.
