In a groundbreaking achievement, SpaceX, in collaboration with T-Mobile, successfully sent and received the first text messages via its Direct-to-Device (D2D) Starlink satellites launched just over a week ago.

The initiative, revealed in August 2022, aims to provide satellite internet connectivity to regular cell phones, ensuring T-Mobile customers can stay connected even in terrestrial dead zones.

T-Mobile plans to publicly launch text services with SpaceX in 2024, with subsequent plans to include voice, data, and Internet of Things (IoT) services by 2025. SpaceX has established global partnerships, including collaborations with Rogers in Canada, Optus in Australia, KDDI in Japan, and others.

This ambitious endeavor involves deploying specialized versions of Starlink satellites with D2D capability. SpaceX successfully launched the initial six satellites on January 2, completing early tests without any issues. The system, utilizing LTE/4G protocols (not 5G), offers a unique challenge due to the satellites' rapid movement relative to Earth, requiring seamless data handoffs between them.
