Initially, Amazon will invest $1.25 billion in a minority stake in Anthropic with the option to increase the investment to the total amount.
Anthropic, which recently launched a subscription-based premium chatbot service, intends to develop an AI model called "Claude-Next" that is ten times more capable than existing AI systems.
However, this ambitious project requires significant funding, estimated at a billion dollars over the next 18 months. Amazon's investment will not only provide financial backing but also access to Amazon Web Services (AWS) for mission critical tasks, safety research, and AI model development. Anthropic will use AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips for its AI model development.
Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, expressed optimism about the company's technological advancements, highlighting the continuous scaling of neural nets. Amazon aims to improve customer experiences by leveraging Anthropic's AI capabilities, including Amazon Bedrock and AWS Trainium, to build generative AI applications.
This partnership strengthens Amazon's position in the competitive AI sector, aligning it with other tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Meta in the race for AI dominance. Anthropic, with its focus on creating highly advanced AI models, is set to play a crucial role in Amazon's AI initiatives.
