YouTube has begun cracking down on Premium family subscriptions when members don’t share the same household, Android Police reports.

The $23/month family plan allows up to five people, but since 2023 Google has officially required that all participants reside in a single household. Previously, YouTube made little effort to enforce this rule. Now, the platform is actively monitoring accounts to see if members are located in the same place as the subscription owner.

Users who violate the rule are receiving emails warning of suspension:

Your YouTube Premium family membership requires all members to be in the same household as the family manager.

YouTube is giving subscribers 14 days to fix the issue. After that, access to Premium perks will be suspended, though affected users will remain in the family group and can continue watching with ads.

Subscribers can confirm their eligibility through YouTube’s support form. The stricter enforcement follows shortly after Google began testing a new Premium plan designed for two users.
