Apple’s foldable iPhone Ultra may support only two apps at a time

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has shared new details about Apple’s first foldable iPhone, including how the company plans to use the extra screen space, in an interview with Tom’s Guide.

According to Gurman, the iPhone Ultra will feature an outer display measuring around 5.5 inches, while unfolding the device will reveal a 7.8-inch internal screen.

• The crease will not disappear entirely, but Gurman expects it to be minimal, potentially matching or improving on what Samsung has achieved with its latest foldables.
• Much of the larger display will be handled by iOS 27, which has reportedly been adapted specifically for the foldable form factor. Users will be able to run two apps side by side, while some apps will adopt layouts closer to their iPad versions.
• Content can also be moved between the two apps using drag and drop. Apple is not expected to bring full desktop-style windowing to the device, however, keeping its multitasking system simpler than the one currently available on iPadOS.

Gurman also confirmed that MagSafe will be supported, despite earlier uncertainty over whether Apple could fit the magnetic charging and accessory system into the unusually thin design.

Durability has reportedly been another major focus, particularly around the hinge, as Apple tries to make its first foldable feel as reliable as a conventional iPhone. Reaching that goal appears to have required some hardware compromises elsewhere.

The iPhone Ultra is not expected to include a dedicated telephoto camera, while Touch ID in the power button could replace Face ID for authentication. Inside, the device is expected to use Apple’s latest Pro-series chip alongside the company’s current-generation in-house modem.

Gurman expects Apple’s foldable iPhone to cost more than $2,000. The device could be unveiled at Apple’s September 9 event.
