U.S. President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok’s American assets for the third time. According to the newly signed executive order, the platform can continue operating in the U.S. for another 90 days — despite a law requiring its ban if negotiations make no progress.
As Reuters reports, Trump had already delayed the ban twice — first until April, then until June 19. Now, the extension is official. The president gave a simple explanation: TikTok has become a key communication tool with young voters during his election campaign, and its removal at this moment is "undesirable."
According to sources, negotiations with China are still ongoing. Trump expressed confidence that Xi Jinping would approve a compromise deal, even suggesting the U.S. might lower tariffs on Chinese goods as an incentive.
TikTok thanked the president for the decision and said it’s actively working with the office of Vice President J.D. Vance. The administration maintains the extension is legally sound and aims to preserve the platform without compromising user data security.
Talks over a possible U.S. investor takeover of TikTok’s American assets have been underway since spring. However, China has made it clear it won't agree to carve the platform into a U.S.-controlled independent entity — especially amid heightened trade tensions with Washington.
