U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 90-day delay on sweeping import tariffs for more than 75 countries, temporarily reducing the rate to 10% during this period.
The decision took immediate effect and applies to most of America’s trading partners — with the notable exception of China. In a post on Truth Social, Trump explained that the easing came in response to diplomatic outreach from dozens of countries, many of which refrained from issuing retaliatory tariffs. As a result, the administration opted to soften its stance and continue negotiations.
China, however, received different treatment. Trump said the country imposed counter-tariffs, prompting the U.S. to raise the rate on Chinese imports to 125% — the harshest measure in the current policy package.
Trump first announced the broad tariff initiative on April 2. The original proposal covered nearly 180 countries and territories, with rates ranging from 10% to nearly 50%. Among the highest were 46% for Vietnam, 44% for Sri Lanka, and 49% for Cambodia.
Global financial markets reacted sharply, with major stock indices posting their steepest losses in months amid growing fears of an escalating trade conflict.
