The United States has pushed back against the European Union’s plans to tighten regulations on artificial intelligence.

According to Bloomberg, the U.S. diplomatic mission to the EU sent an official letter to the European Commission, urging it to reconsider its draft AI code of practice. The letter argues that the proposed rules create disproportionate barriers and unfairly target American tech companies.

The EU is currently developing new regulations aimed at increasing algorithm transparency, mitigating risks, and enforcing copyright protections. While the code is technically voluntary, compliance will be closely tied to the upcoming AI Act — with violations potentially leading to fines of up to 7% of a company's global revenue.

Donald Trump, who is seeking a return to the White House, has previously criticized EU policies, calling European regulation a "form of taxation" on American businesses. His position has been echoed by U.S. lawmakers, with House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan accusing the EU of undermining free speech.
