Tesla has accused its former employee, Jay Lee, of unlawfully appropriating project documentation related to the development of its humanoid robot, Optimus.

The lawsuit was filed on June 11, 2025, in a federal court in San Francisco. The second defendant is Lee’s company, Proception, which Tesla claims has benefited from the stolen technology.

According to the court filings, Lee worked at Tesla from August 2022 to September 2024, specializing in developing the sensory system for Optimus’ hand. The company alleges that in the days leading up to his resignation, Lee copied key project files onto two of his personal smartphones. Just days after leaving Tesla, he registered the startup Proception, which unveiled an “advanced robotic hand” within six months—bearing a suspicious resemblance to Tesla’s designs.

As supporting evidence, Tesla pointed to an internal memo from August 2024 that warned employees about the consequences of intellectual property theft and reminded them of Tesla’s digital monitoring systems.

Tesla argues that Lee acted deliberately to exploit proprietary technology for his own business interests. As of publication, neither the startup nor the accused has issued a comment.
