According to Electrek, SpaceX has purchased more than 1,000 Cybertrucks, with the total order potentially set to nearly double in the future.
Witnesses report that dozens, and possibly hundreds, of Cybertrucks are already in use around the Starbase launch site in southern Texas. Sources say SpaceX views the vehicles as part of its corporate fleet and may eventually expand it to as many as 2,000 units.
The purchase allows Tesla to support its sales figures and partially clear inventory. Tesla initially planned annual Cybertruck production of up to 250,000 vehicles, but actual output and demand have fallen far short of that target.
By indirect estimates, Tesla is currently selling fewer than 20,000 Cybertrucks per year. Despite more than one million reservations at launch, only around 60,000 have translated into actual purchases.
Analysts cite several reasons for the weaker-than-expected demand, including a higher final price than originally promised, the absence of some advertised features, and limited driving range. While the Cybertruck’s unconventional design has generated significant media attention, it has yet to deliver comparable commercial success.
