South Korea will bring its framework Artificial Intelligence Act into force on January 22, 2026, becoming the first country to implement a fully comprehensive regulatory regime for the AI sector.
According to Cryptopolitan, citing The Korea Times, the law provides for the creation of a national AI committee, the development of a baseline three-year industry roadmap, and mandatory safety and transparency requirements. Certain categories of AI systems will be required to disclose how they are used and how they operate.
While the European Union adopted its own AI Act earlier, its core provisions will not take effect until August 2026, with some elements delayed until 2027. South Korea, by contrast, is moving faster as global competition in AI intensifies.
Businesses, however, have raised concerns. Industry representatives warn that secondary regulations defining how the law will be applied in practice are expected to be released only weeks before it comes into force. This could create significant challenges, particularly for startups.
A survey conducted by Startup Alliance among 101 South Korean AI companies found that 98% have yet to establish compliance systems. Nearly half of respondents said they are not familiar with the law’s content at all, while roughly the same share said they have begun preparations but are running out of time. Industry sources warn that if the current timeline holds, some companies may be forced to urgently modify or even suspend their services after January 22.
