OpenAI has announced Atlas, its own AI-powered web browser designed to rethink how people interact with the internet. The app is now available for macOS users.

Atlas features a built-in version of ChatGPT and an AI agent that can read and understand the contents of any web page. A sidebar chatbot lets users instantly process online information with the help of AI, without switching tabs or copying text.

Its key feature is the AI agent mode, which allows ChatGPT to perform tasks autonomously under the user’s control. In this mode, the model can browse sites, search for information, or even book travel — from finding flights to completing the checkout process.

The agent mode is currently available to paid ChatGPT subscribers on Plus, Pro, and Business plans, though OpenAI says the feature will expand to all users later on.

Another addition lets ChatGPT interact directly with text highlighted on a webpage. After selecting a fragment, users see context-aware actions relevant to the chosen text, offering a faster, smarter alternative to the traditional right-click menu.

OpenAI emphasizes that privacy remains in the user’s hands. Individuals can decide which sites the AI is allowed to analyze and which remain off-limits.

Versions of Atlas for Windows, iOS, and Android are on the way, though OpenAI hasn’t yet shared a release timeline.
