No major carmaker is willing to license Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, Elon Musk has complained.

The Tesla CEO called it “crazy” on X that not a single automaker is interested in adopting FSD under Tesla’s licensing terms.

“When legacy auto does occasionally reach out, they tepidly discuss implementing FSD for a tiny program in 5 years with unworkable requirements for Tesla, so pointless,” Musk wrote.

His comments followed a post by Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt, who argued that “public awareness remains low” and claimed that “not even 1 out of 100 Americans have ridden in a self-driving car.”

As Electrek notes, Musk first mentioned “preliminary discussions” about licensing FSD during Tesla’s Q4 2020 earnings call, and repeated that invitation several times afterward. In June 2023, he publicly stated that Tesla was “happy to license Autopilot/FSD or other Tesla technology” to competitors.

In 2024, Musk even said Tesla was negotiating with a major automaker and that the likelihood of a deal was high, but those talks ultimately went nowhere.
