Nike has officially introduced Project Amplify — the world’s first powered footwear system to support the natural movement of the lower leg and ankle during walking and running.

According to the company, these shoes aren’t made for professional athletes but for everyday runners, helping them move faster and longer while exerting less effort.

Nike compared Project Amplify to electric bicycles, which have made urban commuting easier and more accessible. The new system follows the same logic — to make jogging, slow running, and walking more comfortable. The company specifically highlighted users who typically run at a pace of 10–12 minutes per mile (about 1.6 km).

Technically, the setup is simple: each shoe houses a lightweight electric motor connected to a drive belt and a compact rechargeable cuff battery. The mechanism is integrated into a carbon-fiber frame that provides both durability and lightness. The motor assists with every step, reducing strain on muscles and joints.

The sneakers can also be worn without the active system, for instance, when the battery is depleted, preserving the familiar feel of classic Nike running shoes.

Nike said it plans to bring Project Amplify to the consumer market in the coming years. The first version isn’t intended for competitive runners looking to shave seconds off their times but for anyone who wants to move farther and faster with less effort.
