Lego unveiled Smart Brick at CES 2026, an interactive 2×4 brick that contains a full onboard computer with sensors and wireless connectivity.
Lego describes it as the biggest update to its building system in 50 years, since the introduction of minifigures in 1978.

Smart Brick can detect NFC tags embedded in special tiles and minifigures and can also sense nearby Smart Bricks. This allows sets to respond dynamically to player actions. Vehicles can produce sounds, characters can trigger music and effects, and scene elements can change behavior depending on what’s happening. The first sets to use the technology will be based on Star Wars.

Unlike previous interactive Lego lines, Smart Brick does not require replaceable batteries. The brick charges wirelessly, and a single charging pad can power multiple bricks at once. Lego says the built-in battery is designed to handle long periods of storage without significant degradation.
Inside the Smart Brick are light, motion, and sound sensors, a Bluetooth module, and a custom ASIC processor smaller than a single Lego stud. The bricks form a mesh network and can understand each other’s orientation and position. They can detect whether a vehicle has flipped over or which car crossed the finish line first in a race. Firmware updates are delivered through a mobile app.
The microphone is not used for voice recording but as an additional control input, such as responding to a clap or a puff of air. Lego emphasized that there are no cameras or AI inside the brick.
The first Smart Brick sets will go on sale on March 1, 2026, priced between $70 and $160. Lego says Smart Brick is intended to serve as the foundation of a long-term ecosystem that will expand well beyond a single franchise.
