Google has announced deep integration of its Gemini AI into the Chrome browser.

In the next few weeks, Chrome’s address bar will get a new AI mode. And later this year, Google plans to roll out an agent codenamed Project Mariner, designed to handle tasks on the web for you.

Gemini will gain access to tabs, browsing history, and data from Google apps including Gmail and Calendar. Users will be able to switch between standard search and AI mode via a dedicated icon in the address bar, and type full questions instead of short keyword queries.

The AI will be able to summarize web pages, interact across multiple tabs, and take actions within a single tab, such as scheduling a meeting or finding a YouTube video. Paid restrictions on Gemini’s use in Chrome will also be lifted.

“We are evolving the browser to help you get the most from the web — in ways we didn’t think possible even a few years ago. And we are doing it while keeping the speed, simplicity and safety of Chrome that so many people love,” said Rick Osterloh, Google’s SVP of Platforms and Devices.

The new Gemini will also be more tightly integrated with services like Google Calendar, YouTube, and Maps, allowing users to access them directly without opening separate pages.
