Google is reportedly preparing to phase out ChromeOS in favor of a new Android-based operating system developed under the codename Aluminium OS. Android Authority reported the news after reviewing internal documents and job listings.

The leak suggests Google is hiring managers specifically to oversee the transition “from ChromeOS to Aluminium.” The new system, referenced in documents as ALOS, is positioned as a unified platform for laptops, tablets and hybrid devices.

Notably, Google uses the British spelling “Aluminium,” which serves a dual purpose. It fits the company’s tradition of naming projects after metals, such as Chromium, and subtly nods to “AI,” since artificial intelligence is expected to be the core of the new OS.

According to the roadmap, Google is not limiting the system to the budget segment. Devices running ALOS will span multiple tiers, from the entry-level “AL Entry” to higher-end “AL Mass Premium” and “AL Premium.” The lineup signals Google’s intent to compete directly with MacBooks and the iPad Pro.

Inside the company, engineers already refer to the current operating system as “ChromeOS Classic.” The transition is not expected to be immediate. Both platforms will coexist for a period before ChromeOS is eventually retired.
