Google has begun gradually rolling out a feature that will allow users to change the email address associated with their Google account, including addresses ending in @gmail.com.
Previously, this option was available only to users who relied on third-party email addresses, while Gmail users were permanently tied to the username they originally chose.
Details about the new option appeared on one of Google’s help pages. According to the page, users will be able to replace their current Gmail address with a new one that also uses the @gmail.com domain. For now, the notice is visible only on the Hindi-language version of the page, suggesting a phased rollout.
The documentation states that address changes will be limited to once every 12 months. The original Gmail address will not be deleted and can continue to be used alongside the new one.
Google has not yet made an official announcement, but the help page notes that the feature will become available to all users as the rollout progresses. For many, this offers a long-awaited chance to retire email addresses created years ago without losing access to their account or data.
