The European Union has officially required manufacturers to fit new laptops drawing up to 100W with a USB-C charging port, TechPowerUp reports.
The new rule came into force on Tuesday, 28 April. The initiative is aimed at cutting electronic waste, standardising chargers, and lowering costs for consumers. A similar law for smartphones has been in place since 2024.
The rule comes with exceptions. Gaming laptops and devices that draw more than 100W can continue to use traditional round power connectors.
As of 28 April, selling new devices without the USB-C standard inside the EU is illegal. The restrictions, however, do not apply to the second-hand market.
The report notes that the law does not ban alternative charging methods, and manufacturers are free to fit any additional connectors alongside the mandatory USB-C port.
