Reddit has started testing a new way to consume posts, turning popular text-based content into video and audio versions, TechCrunch reports.

The test began on Monday in select communities as Reddit looks to determine which types of posts work best in the new format and whether the feature should be rolled out more widely. CEO Steve Huffman first discussed plans to add audio and visual versions of viral posts during the company’s second-quarter earnings call in July, noting that users already consume Reddit content this way on other platforms.

Reddit stories have long been repackaged for TikTok and Meta’s Reels, where creators narrate or read posts aloud, often with on-screen captions and unrelated background footage such as gameplay or cooking videos.

For now, the test is limited to English-language posts and is available in Reddit’s iOS and Android apps. The original text and comments will remain available, allowing users to choose whether they want to read, watch or listen to a post.

This is not Reddit’s first experiment with video. The platform already has its own video hosting system, tested a TikTok-style vertical feed in 2023, and recently introduced video attachments in comments, which now account for more than 10% of all video posts on the platform.
