Apple has been granted a patent for a projector capable of displaying augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) content directly onto surfaces like desks and walls, eliminating the need for a headset or screen.

The technology would allow users to view a mix of low- and high-resolution content, with the potential for motorized movement to adjust projections onto different surfaces.

One potential use, as described by Apple, is for others to view the same content as a Vision Pro user, with the projector displaying a 2D version of the AR/VR experience on nearby surfaces. The device could be used in various scenarios, such as in restaurants for virtual menus or in other applications where 2D images appear 3D.

While the Hololamp appears to project a hologram onto the restaurant tabletop, all is not what it appears to be. The portable projector uses 200 lumens to project a bright image on to the table top. But this is a flat image. And here is where the magic happens.

Apple suggests that this projector could be designed to fit a standard light bulb socket, using cameras to detect room dimensions and textures for more realistic projections.

The patent marks a significant step forward in Apple's AR/VR ambitions, though it's unclear if the technology will result in a standalone product.
