Apple shipped five planeloads of iPhones and other devices from India to the U.S. over a three-day span in late March — just before the White House introduced new import tariffs, according to The Times of India, citing a senior Indian official.
The stockpile is expected to help Apple maintain current retail prices for now. According to one source, the shipments came not only from India but also from China.
“The reserves that arrived at lower duty will temporarily insulate the company from the higher prices that it will need to pay for new shipments under the revised tax rates,” the source told the outlet.
Apple is now likely to ramp up production in India, where import duties are set at just 26%. For comparison, goods from China face a 54% tariff.
Bloomberg previously reported that Apple may be forced to raise iPhone and device prices due to the new trade measures.
