According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple has developed a pad-like device that will be used in its retail stores to update the software on iPhones prior to sale.

This innovative system will eliminate the need for users to customize new iPhones and get software updates after purchase. Instead, Apple's solution will ensure that iPhones are up to date right out of the box.

Retail store employees will place boxes of iPhones on top of the pad-like device. This system will wirelessly turn on each iPhone, update its software to the latest version, and then power it down again—all without ever opening the phone's packaging.

This move by Apple is expected to be implemented in its retail stores before the end of the year. Currently, iPhones are shipped from the factory with the iOS version available at that time, which can sometimes be outdated by the time customers receive their new devices.
