Apple has reportedly started testing a 200-megapixel camera for a future iPhone, according to MacRumors, citing leaker Digital Chat Station.

The company is currently evaluating a large 1/1.2-inch sensor, similar to the one expected in the upcoming Oppo Find X9 Ultra. Earlier reports suggested Apple was still focused on refining its existing 48-megapixel systems, but testing of higher-resolution sensors now appears to be underway.

A 200MP camera could significantly improve image detail, enable more aggressive cropping without quality loss, and allow for large-format printing. Samsung has already introduced 200-megapixel sensors in its Galaxy S23 Ultra and later models, while analysts previously predicted Apple would adopt similar technology closer to 2028.

The potential launch could also align with a major milestone. Apple is expected to mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone in 2027, making a new camera system a possible headline feature for a premium anniversary model.
