Microsoft and OpenAI have announced $10 million in grants to help select media outlets incorporate AI tools into their newsrooms.

The funding, split into $2.5 million in cash and $2.5 million in software credits from each company, will support local news organizations like The Seattle Times and The Minnesota Star Tribune.

The grants will allow these outlets to hire AI-focused fellows for two years to develop AI applications for journalism, such as transcription, content summaries, and enhanced audience engagement.

While nothing will replace the central role of reporters, we believe that AI technology can help in the research, investigation, distribution, and monetization of important journalism,

Tom Rubin, the chief of intellectual property and content at OpenAI, said in the press release.

Despite ongoing copyright lawsuits, Microsoft and OpenAI continue promoting AI technology in the media sector.
