A US District Judge has issued a permanent injunction requiring Google to open its Play Store to competitors and allow Android apps to be available in alternate app stores.

This ruling stems from a four-year antitrust lawsuit filed by Epic Games in 2020. The decision forces Google to give third-party app stores access to the Play Store's library and prevents exclusive deals with app developers.

Additionally, Google can no longer require developers to use its billing system or stop them from offering cheaper payment options outside of Google Play. A committee will monitor Google’s compliance, and the company plans to appeal the decision, citing competition with Apple and potential security concerns.

The ruling contrasts with a similar case Epic filed against Apple, which Epic largely lost.
