Bluesky has officially launched direct messaging (DM) capabilities. This new feature marks a significant development for the platform, which previously only supported public conversations.
Users can now start private conversations through Bluesky’s “Chat” tab, available on both mobile and desktop applications. Currently, the feature supports one-to-one messages only. By default, only users you follow can send you DMs, though settings can be adjusted to allow messages from anyone, no one, or just followed users.
The addition of DMs aligns Bluesky's user experience more closely with X (formerly Twitter), and offers a competitive edge over Meta’s Threads, which lacks this DM functionality.
Bluesky has recently introduced other features as well, such as personalized Discover feeds, which allow users to tailor their content preferences. With approximately 5.6 million users, Bluesky is poised for further expansion, with upcoming features including video support and anti-harassment tools.
