The new feature, custom instructions, allows the AI chatbot to retain information about users from one conversation to the next, eliminating the need to repeat personal details each time a query is made.

This opt-in beta is currently available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, it promises to optimize interactions and offer customized responses.

In the past, AI chatbots did not have permanent memory and started each conversation anew. Now, however, with custom instructions, users can set unique parameters that are stored across all chats.

The functionality will be rolled out across the platform, making it available to third-party applications that use ChatGPT as base code. The convenience of remembering user preferences could be particularly useful on smartphones, where repeating information can become more tedious.

OpenAI emphasizes that user instructions are intended to optimize queries, not to create all-inclusive AI-based personal assistants.

While this update is currently available to paying ChatGPT subscribers, it is not accessible in the UK and EU as of now. However, OpenAI has plans to extend availability to those regions shortly.
