New AI-powered features being rolled out on Discord

A multitude of artificial intelligence announcements were made by the popular chat app.

Discord, the messaging app initially designed for gamers, has become a preferred online hangout spot for Gen Z. The platform is now set to introduce several artificial intelligence-powered features, including an AI chatbot, an automated AI moderator, a conversation summarizer, an avatar remixer, and a whiteboard.

While OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot has helped AI gain traction, Discord has had an active AI community for some time, with over 30 million monthly users already utilizing third-party AI apps on the platform. Additionally, nearly 3 million Discord servers already integrate some AI component into their communities. The largest Discord community is Midjourney, a text-to-image AI project with over 13 million members. With AI already such an integral part of the platform, it's no surprise that Discord is now bringing AI directly to its platform.

One of the AI features set to launch is AutoMod AI, which searches the server and contacts moderators when it detects rule violations. The AI also considers conversation context to avoid penalizing users for misconstrued posts. Another AI-powered feature is Clyde, a bot that will now be able to answer users' questions and find specific emojis or GIFs based on their descriptions. Discord will also launch Conversation Summaries, which bundles chats into topics to allow users to catch up on what they missed.

Additionally, developers can start using Avatar Remix, an open-source Discord app that integrates AI art into the messaging app, to change a user's avatar. Discord will also launch an "AI incubator" to support developers creating AI-powered apps on the platform. Finally, Discord revealed an AI-powered whiteboard feature for collaborative AI art and more.
