ChromeOS and Android will be merged into a single unified platform, according to Samir Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google. His comments were reported by TechRadar.
During a conversation, Samat noticed that a TechRadar journalist was using a MacBook Pro and asked why they had chosen that particular device. He later explained the reason behind his question:
I asked because we’re going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform, and I am very interested in how people are using their laptops these days and what they’re getting done.
Rumors about a possible merger between Android and ChromeOS began circulating last year. Early leaks suggested that Google would bring ChromeOS onto Android, rather than developing an entirely new system from scratch.
With this move, Google appears to be aiming for tighter integration between its mobile and desktop platforms — in a way similar to how Apple bridges iOS and macOS through iPadOS. No further details have been disclosed about the timeline or structure of the unified OS.
