Chinese EV manufacturer Xpeng has unveiled its ambitious "Land Aircraft Carrier," a hybrid flying car, with its first public flight demonstration at the Zhuhai Air Show.
The event showcased Xpeng’s innovative vision for combining ground and air travel in a single vehicle, with over 2,000 orders rolling in immediately after the launch.
The Land Aircraft Carrier features a six-wheeled electric vehicle paired with a detachable flying module. The EV itself boasts a length of 5.5 meters, three axles, two rows of seats, and a spacious trunk where the drone-like flying module is stored. With a range of 1,000 kilometers on the ground, the EV is designed for long-distance journeys before taking to the skies.
The flying module, resembling a large drone with a two-person cabin, can be deployed from the trunk at the push of a button. The process is fully automated and takes approximately five minutes. Xpeng claims the module’s battery can support 5–6 flights on a full charge, with recharging from 30% to 80% taking just 18 minutes via the vehicle.
At the demonstration, Xpeng showcased a fully autonomous flight, including takeoff and landing, though manual controls are also available. According to the company, learning to operate the flying module takes only three hours, emphasizing ease of use for a wide range of customers.
The Land Aircraft Carrier is priced at approximately $280,000 (2 million yuan), and Xpeng aims to sell 10,000 units annually starting in 2025. With preorders from 12 Chinese companies already in place, the firm touts this as a record-breaking milestone for the global flying car industry.
