Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp, owned by Meta, will discontinue support for iPhones running iOS versions below 15.1, according to an announcement on the company's official website.

Currently, WhatsApp is compatible with Android devices running version 5.0 and later, as well as iPhones with iOS 12 or newer. However, beginning next May, the messenger will no longer function on older iPhone models.

Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.

This means that WhatsApp will cease to work on the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, as their latest available update is iOS 12.5.7. The iPhone 5s debuted in September 2013, while the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launched in September 2014.

The decision to phase out support for older devices is tied to WhatsApp’s focus on implementing new features and enhancing security measures. While users with these devices can still access their existing accounts, updates introducing new features will no longer be available for them.
